Paul Alpers, left, of Warsaw and Phillip Haynes, right, of Versailles won the 2017 Crappie Masters National Championship Friday, Sept. 22 and Saturday, Sept. 23 in Greenville, Mississippi. The two Stover High School graduates bested 125 teams with a two-day total weight of 21.89 pounds fishing on six lakes in Arkansas and Mississippi. Alpers and Haynes were in eighth place after the first day of competition and made adjustments on day two to find the quality fish in a little deeper water. Alpers and Haynes took home a $30,000 cash prize for winning the title, an additional $2,000 bonus prize from the Missouri Corn Growers Association and American Ethanol for using E10 fuel in their boat, and a Jenko Fishing prize package.
